The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for the position of Equipment Mechanic I/II in our Public Works Department. Currently there is one (1) vacancy and this recruitment will serve to establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill additional vacancies that could occur over the next 12-month period.

The Equipment Mechanic I/II classification is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either the I or II level, depending on the qualifications of the candidates and the needs of the department.
Equipment Mechanic I: $57,117.46 - $69,425.62/year
Equipment Mechanic II: $71,386.52 - $86,770.49/year
The Equipment Mechanic I/II is responsible for tuning up, servicing and making minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline, CNG, diesel, and electric powered automobiles, trucks, buses, emergency vehicles and construction, turf and maintenance equipment.
The Equipment Mechanic I level is an entry-level classification. Incumbents in this class will receive on-the-job training while learning to perform assigned duties. Equipment Mechanic II is the full journey-level class in the series and is distinguished from the entry level by the performance of the full range of duties and responsibilities and the requirement for a significant level of functional expertise beyond that expected at the entry level.
ABOUT YOU
The ideal candidate will have a thorough working knowledge of heavy duty truck and passenger vehicle automotive repair with experience troubleshooting diesel engines, electrical systems, fuel systems and hydraulic systems. Additionally, the ideal candidate:
- Has a strong work ethic and can work independently with little instruction;
- Is energetic, organized and works quickly to get the job done;
- Is a team player who works collaboratively with others;
- Has a current valid California Class B license with passenger endorsement;
- Has a current ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) T4 Brakes certificate and / or a T8 Preventative Maintenance Inspections certificate;
- Can communicate effectively and excels in customer service;
- Is experienced using computers;
- Has experience writing work orders and maintaining accurate records;
- Is experienced performing vehicle safety inspections;
- Has background in ordering parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:
EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: One (1) year of work experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment. Completion of a related specialized course of study or apprentice program may be substituted for one (1) year experience.
Certification: Possession of an EPA Type II Certificate for handling refrigerant is desirable at the time of hire and is a condition of passing probation and of continued employment.
Completion of the National Institute for Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) test for T4 Brakes and T8 Preventative Maintenance Inspection are desirable at the time or hire and are a condition of passing probation and of continued employment.
License: A valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are required as conditions of initial and continued employment.
A Class B License with passenger endorsement is required prior to completion of probation and is a condition of continued employment.
EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional automotive/equipment maintenance classes are desirable.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that required of the Equipment Mechanic I in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment. Previous experience maintaining transit or school buses and / or heavy construction equipment is desirable. Completion of a specialized course of study or apprentice program can be substituted for one (1) year experience.
Certification: Possession of the ASE T4 and T8 certificates and EPA Type II Certificate for handling refrigerant is required at time of hire and is a condition of continued employment.
License: A Class B license with passenger endorsement is required and is a condition of continued employment.
