Title: Design Draftsperson
Education/Training: AA Degree (or enrolled in final semester) in Computer Drafting or related field is required. Proficiency with a brand of 3-D modeling drafting software. Familiarity with SolidEdge and Altium is a plus.
Experience Required: Electronic Instrumentation Assembly processes, CAD systems, Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Designs; sheet metal, machined and wiring components.
Test Required: Yes - At the time of interview, applicant will be expected to demonstrate an ability to perform tasks in drafting software.
General Job Description Summary
Reports to and receives assignments, instructions and direction from the Engineering Support Manager. Receives day-to-day guidance of routine drafting activities from the Lead Draftsperson and/or Engineering Support Manager. Produces drawings to adequately and accurately convey the ideas of Design and Manufacturing Engineers to production and outside vendors via technical and detailed drawings such as; sheet metal, machine, assembly, schematics silk screen and PCB artwork. Performs various clean-up and housekeeping duties. Observes and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required PPE. Performs various other duties and activities as directed by the Engineering Support Manager. Must meet all elements of the Helena Standards Pertaining to All Jobs, Job Classification Standards – Job Requirements Matrix and General Job Requirements.
A. Essential Job Functions and Requirements
- Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detailed drawings for mechanical, assembly and sheet metal and electrical schematics using standard drafting techniques and software.
- Reviews engineering drawings, blueprints and rough or detailed sketches or notes.
- Communicates with Engineering to clarify any questions about design details and/or problems.
- Creates preliminary or final sketch of proposal drawing.
- Reviews drawings for compliance with ANSI and Helena standards.
- Revises or updates drawings after review and approval by Engineering.
- Revises or updates drawings according to Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
B. Prepares clear, complete and accurate detail drawings for mechanical, assembly, sheet metal and electrical schematics using computer-assisted using computer assisted design (CAD) software.
- Reviews engineering drawings, blueprints and rough or detailed sketches or notes.
- Communicates with Engineering to clarify any questions about design details or problems.
- Enters Engineering specifications into CAD software and composes configurations on computer screen.
- Enters specific commands into computer to retrieve design information from file, enter resizing specifications and display design on computer screen.
- Keys in specific information using keyboard of computers connected to printers to produce hard copy of design.
- Reviews drawings for compliance with ANSI and Helena standards.
- Revises or updates drawings after review and approval by Engineering.
- Revises or updates drawings according to Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
C. Prepares draft layout for printed circuit boards (PCBs) according to engineering specifications.
- Reviews engineering design schematics and support documents.
- Communicates with Engineering to resolve design details and problems.
- Drafts detailed drawings and composes master layout of design components and circuitry.
- Examines and verifies master layout for accuracy.
- Revises or updates drawings after review and approval by Engineering.
- Revises or updates drawings according to Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
D. Operates various printers.
E Performs general housekeeping duties such as, cleaning up work area, cleaning printers and other equipment.
F. Exercises the ability to:
- Read and understand written job instructions, work orders and ECNs.
- Read reference and standards manuals, including ANSI standards and Helena graphic standards.
- Accurately record information and data, including work completed and time per project.
- Understand verbal instructions.
- Accurately exchange technical information with supervisors, coworkers and Engineers.
- Accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals.
- Calculate measurement conversions, such as standard units to metric.
- Accurately read blueprints, schematics and drawings.
- Distinguish colors on monitor screens and engineering models.
- Lift (or team-lift as appropriate) and position materials weighing up to 47 pounds when loading paper into printers.
- Work in sitting position for extended periods when preparing drawings on CAD.
- Utilize finger dexterity to enter data into CAD.
- Utilize eye-hand coordination to enter data into CAD using a computer mouse.
