Part-Time Building Maintainer
Stonington Town Hall Part-time union position.
NATURE OF WORK: This is general utility, custodial and semi-skilled maintenance repair work in the care and upkeep of Town buildings, adjacent grounds, and equipment. Receives general supervision from the First Selectman in his role of Director of Public Works, or his designee.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Receives oral or written instructions, or follows standard cleaning routines and preventive maintenance schedules.
Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, and other work areas at the Town Hall.
Provides cleaning and maintenance services to other town buildings and facilities as needed.
Using brooms, mops, and powered equipment, sweeps, strips, and waxes floors. Using vacuum cleaner, cleans rugs, carpets, draperies, and venetian blinds. Washes walls, windows, door panels, and sills.
Makes minor plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical repairs. Performs interior and exterior painting as needed.
Assists with Central Stores stock handling and deliveries. Makes mail run, and delivers or picks
up materials and supplies as needed. Replenishes bathroom supplies. Moves furniture.
Shovels snow and sweeps dirt from entrances and walks adjacent to town buildings. Cares for plantings and grass adjacent to Town facilities. Removes trash.
Checks basic operations of the heating and cooling equipment. Uses hand tools and small power equipment.
Follows all standard safety procedures and regulations.
Provides assistance to visitors as needed. Sets up rooms for meetings. Assists public using Town facilities by moving equipment, furniture, or materials.
Assists in checking sprinkler system, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and signs, alarm system. Checks security system. Tests emergency generator. Secures offices and building. Unlocks and locks the Town Hall building each day.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Graduation from high school or equivalent; up to one year of experience involving general custodial work on buildings and grounds; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
Knowledge of the type and uses of tools, materials and standard equipment used by the Town in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds.
BUILDING MAINTAINER
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Ability to read and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to lift medium weights.
Ability to work in occasional adverse weather conditions.
Ability to climb and reach in performance of maintenance duties.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to noisy depending on equipment being used.
